Composers and their memberships

Whenever we are asked to recommend a good and reputable place to buy royalty-free music, we usually recommend Shockwave-Sound.com, because these guys are up-front about what you're getting when you buy stock music from them.

General royalty free:

They have a lot of contracted composers who are members of performance rights organizations which ensure that the composer gets a micro payment whenever their music is broadcast or played in public, but who are not members of any mechanical rights organizations -- which means that you can freely use their music in film, video, DVD and multimedia without incurring any additional costs.

If your film/project should be broadcast, the composer will receive a micro-payment for this, but this is already paid for by the broadcaster. Even YouTube and Google Video now pays an annual blanket license fee to performance rights societies. And this is where the money comes from when the composer receives his micro-payment for the broadcast.

If, however, you decide to broadcast this music yourself, or play it in a public venue, you may have to buy a license from a performance rights organization for this.

Completely royalty free:

Additionally, they also have a number of contracted composers who are not members of any kind of organization what so ever. They are not members of any mechanical rights organization which means that their music can be physically manufactured on CD/DVD etc. without paying anything beyond the one-time license fee to the seller. And also they are also not members of any performance rights organization, which means that their music can be broadcast and played in public, by anyone, anywhere, without paying anything beyond the one-time license fee to the seller.
