General terms for use of Production Music

Remember that even Stock Music, Buyout music, Royalty-free music is not "copyright free". NO music is "copyright free". Even after buying music from a music library, there are certain limits to what you can and cannot do with it.

Generally, here is what you cannot do with Royalty-Free Music / Stock Music:

* Release it or distribute it in any way without combining it with video, voiceover, animation, or other media. In other words, you cannot distribute it as a music product.

* Create new music which is partially based on the stock music you obtained. You can't "sample" the stock music, make new music from those samples and then sell or distribute it. You cannot sing, rap or play instruments on top of the stock music and then release/distribute the result, as if it was your own music.

* You cannot sell the music itself.

What you can do with "General royalty-free music"

Production Music or Stock Music comes in two "degrees" of royalty-free status. Some music is created by composers who are members of PRS, ASCAP, BMI, SESAC or similar organizations, but who are not members of any organization for mechanical rights. This music can be used in:

* DVD video
* Audio book
* Corporate presentations on DVD
* Film/video on DVD and other physical media
* Websites and internet video (YouTube, etc.)
* All other products/projects where the music is used together with film, animation, instruction, narration etc. and pressed on CD/DVD.

without paying any additional fees.

If your film and presentation should be broadcast, the performance rights organization will come into the picture, but that license fee is paid annually by the broadcaster - not by you.

If you want to broadcast the music yourself or play it in public, then you have to get a license from the performance rights organization.
